In Thailand 10+ peoples on a pick-up truck or 4 peoples on a motorbike is not uncommon. New Year holiday from December 29th to January 4th are called the seven dangerous days.
This New Year there were a total of 358 deaths from road accidents during the "seven dangerous days" and with 3,750 others injured. Drunk driving and speeding were the two major causes of road accidents. Most of the accidents involved motorcycles and pick-up trucks.
Traffic is the most dangerous thing to be aware of when on holiday in Thailand, especially the big holidays like western new year and thai new year, Songkran, in April. Better to stay home these days.
